Fixed Bugs & Known Limitations

Bug fixes:

  • MSC Apex verification workflow: The material information in case of orthotropic material behaviour are transferred to Apex so that the information fit to the global coordinate system instead of the build direction in Generative Design.

  • Fixed a bug where in Post Processing displayed displacements differed the calculated by a factor of 10³.

Known Limitations:

  • MSC Apex verification workflow: direct loads are transferred incorrectly from MSC Apex Generative Design to MSC Apex. The load is applied to each node instead of the face. Please transform the direct load into a remote load in MSC Apex so that the loading conditions are the same.

  • When using Symmetry and/or Support Reduction, the translational displacements may be plotted incorrectly on the result geometry. They might be plotted according to the principal coordinate system defined during the symmetry/support reduction setup and not according to the global coordinate system. However, the displacements are considered correctly during the calculation and design generation - just the visualization in the post processing is impacted.

  • In case of anisotropic material stiffness and the directional dependent Tsai Wu transeversely isotropic Failure Criterion with widely spaced values, the optimisation may not give stable results.

For a better result, the Tsai-Wu 3D orthotropic Failure Criterion should be used (available with the Advanced User Settings). Please have a look here for further information.

  • Remote submittal of simulation for Linux is not supported in MSC Apex Generative Design release 2023.1. However, one could use command line submittal of Optimization jobs on both Linux and Windows and import the results into the application. For more information on Command Line Optimization; please see: Generative Design - Command Line Optimisation

  • MSC Apex Generative Design might not visualize Non-Design Spaces / Interfaces using the Shape Quality “Preview”. The Non-Design Spaces / Interfaces are considered in the optimisation but because of the coarse resolution level of these iterations not visualized (fully). Choose another Shape Quality setting to run a complete optimisation and receive a full visualization.

  • "Restart" is not directly selectable in the User Interface but is available for the optimisation as an unsupported option using the Advanced User Settings. For more information have a look here. Be aware a restarted optimisation result will differ from a non restarted run.

  • The simulation may fail using a remote solver due to the case sensitivity of the machine name.

  • MSC Apex Generative Design may not start up due to the presence of wide-characters in the program path. Please change the location of the program to a path without any wide characters.

  • While uninstalling MSC Apex Generative Design some files might not be removed.

  • If Retained Volumes are included, the mass is estimated based on the different densities of the volumes.

  • When using the GD Configuration Tool, loads and boundary conditions placed on the original parts Non-Design cells will not be transferred to the created Design Space. Please create the loads and boundary conditions after creating the Design Space with the GD Configuration Tool.

  • An optimisation which uses only 1 CPU Thread cannot be executed. Please adjust the number of CPU Threads in the Application Settings - Generative Design Solver or in case of a Command Line Optimisation in the Configuration File.

  • When the interface thickness ≥ offset distance then the interface volume will be hidden in GUI due to a current limitation. The optimization will still consider the entered values and the Print Geometry will consider the entered Machining Allowance value.

  • If a symmetry Design Space is created, changing/updating the Principal Coordinate System afterwards doesn’t have any impact on the symmetry coordinate system and thus no impact on the used coordinate system for the optimisation.
